Toroa, the captain of the Mataatua canoe had been instructed by his father Irakewa to look for three landmarks in his search for Kakahoroa (the ancient name of Whakatane) They were Wairere Falls, Muriwai's cave and Irakewa's Rock

This is one of the landmarks Toroa was told to look out for on his journey from Hawaiiki to Aotearoa (New Zealand)
