KAKAHOROA / WHAKATANE NEW ZEALAND
Kia ora everyone, We thought it would be great to share some of our towns history. Wahi tapu sites are significant to Maori in this area as the sites link us to our whakapapa / geneology. These sites carry the very essence of our tipuna / forefathers.
Kakahoroa is the ancient name of our town Whakatane given by Maui the mischievevious, the trickster, who always played tricks on his brothers. I hope you enjoy the history we have shared with you on our class blog. More to come...
Toroa, the captain of the Mataatua canoe had been instructed by his father Irakewa to look for three landmarks in his search for Kakahoroa (the ancient name of Whakatane) They were Wairere Falls, Muriwai's cave and Irakewa's Rock
Te Wairere ( Wairere Falls)
This is one of the landmarks Toroa was told to look out for on his journey from Hawaiiki to Aotearoa (New Zealand)
